Public Transit: NJ Transit buses service Freehold Borough and Township. That offers access to other parts of Monmouth County and beyond.

Commuting: Many residents commute to jobs in other NJ cities; some go into NYC via connecting transit (trains or buses). Travel times depend on traffic and origin.

Proximity to amenities: Shopping, dining, parks, and other services are relatively close; you don’t have to go far for essentials. The Freehold Raceway Mall is a major shopping hub.

Diversity & Culture: The town has a mix of long-time families, newcomers, and a growing multicultural population. There are neighborhoods of varied housing styles and price points.

Pace: It’s more relaxed than big cities, yet lively enough—lots of downtown activity, community events, restaurants, festivals. Great if you want suburban comfort + some local energy.

History

Founding: Freehold Township was settled in 1685 by Scottish reformers. It was officially established (as a township) in 1693—one of the earliest townships in Monmouth County.

The Borough (historic downtown area) has Revolutionary War connections. The Battle of Monmouth (1778) is nearby.

Historic Identity: The area has long had a mix of rural, agricultural roots (especially in the township) and more urban/commercial development in the Borough. Farms, churches, historic preservation are important to local identity.

Famous Freeholders: Freehold has produced some well-known figures who’ve made an impact far beyond Monmouth County. The most famous is Bruce Springsteen, who grew up in Freehold Borough and often references his hometown in his music, capturing the working-class spirit of the community.
